I have a roof over their heads, and clothes on their back. I love them, I AM CAPABLE, I AM WORTHY”. If you don’t have a roof over their heads, or a job, then get one!! You are worthy, you can make that happen, you brought them into this world, they need you, I PROMISE YOU!!
Now let’s get down to the meat and potatoes!!
My Tips and Tricks to making it work as a single dad:
Organization. Dad’s you need to get organized. This is the area where you probably need the most help. I want you to invest right now in a board system. If you’re ready to go when they get up, you can solely focus on them and not stress. Get them up, dressed, fed, etc. Your evening routine is dinner, homework help, cleaning up, getting them bathed, getting their clothes, school stuff together, important papers signed, etc for the morning. Bedtime needs to be consistent. Same time every night. Same goes for homework. When your kids get home from school they get a snack and then its time for homework. If they have phones/ipads I take them away at bedtime. They go on kitchen table and don’t get touched until morning AFTER their ready for school. They need and want a routine designed by you. Get their input. Kids are more apt to following their routine if they get a say in it.
Chores. I have an 8, 9, and an 11 yr. old. I am not a machine, nor am I their servant and they are NOT mine. We all have to contribute to our family. Make a list of each child’s chores. Color code it, make it fancy, whatever and put it on the refrigerator. It’s up to you if you want to pay them or not. I don’t pay them for daily chores like bed making, brushing teeth, picking up plates. However, I do pay them for room re-organization, cleaning out and organizing shoe closet, or cleaning the garage to name a few.
Remember, breathe, it’s ok that your a single father needing help.
Meals. I am the kind of parent that makes what my kids WANT to eat. I want them to enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Keep Breakfast easy during the week. Cereal, oatmeal, yogurt w/granola, eggs. Weekends make it fun, do pancakes, waffles, eggs, and bacon. Don’t forget their vitamins. Buy a multi vitamin for kids, it’s essential. For Lunch during school, have them buy if it’s easier on you. If you can’t afford that, have you looked into your local school districts reduced lunch program? It’s on the school districts website, or just call the school. If you want them to bring, have your kids pack their snacks the night before. Then in morning while their eating breakfast make the main meal, like their sandwich. Dinner is the tough one. If your like me you’re running from work to a child’s practice or game. I only do takeout when I have multiple kids doing something on the same night.
Otherwise, I sit down with each child on Sundays and ask them what they want for dinner, for the upcoming week, meaning main meal items, (protein). Every child has to have a protein on their plate. Period. We don’t do a bowl of pasta for dinner. Protein is what fills them up, not the carbs. The sides are the easy part. A veggie, cut up fruit and a carb. For the veggies get the bags of veggies you can cook in the microwave, it’s easier. My kids get 2 choices at dinner, milk or water. No juice, no pop.

Laundry. Do you have enough clothes for your kids to where you only need to wash clothes once a week? My kids have at least 8 days worth of PJ’s, underwear, shirts, pants, socks, sports bras, etc. I’m running a ship here. I work roughly 70 hrs. a week. It doesn’t fit for me to do laundry every couple of days. I do laundry on Friday’s after work. Then put it away over the weekend.
Laundry Tips: All towels get washed together, don’t mix with clothes. I change the sheets every other week. Unless you have younger ones and they wet the bed occasionally. In that case you need to check their sheets every morning, just to be safe. I wash dark clothes together and whites together. Always dry on delicate so the clothes don’t shrink. If you do a load of wash you can’t leave it in the washer for more than 2 hrs. The door is closed its wet in there all the clothes will smell like mildew.
Communicate. I am the Captain and my kids are my ship mates. We need each other. Whether you have boys or girls remember you are playing the dad AND the mom role. Talk to them. We have a family talk one day a week, and it’s always at dinner. Everyone gets to say ANYTHING that’s on their mind. This is how we fix things and make our ship run better. Do you have daughters? Do you make them feel comfortable enough to come to you and tell you they need you to buy them pads/tampons at the store? Can they talk to you about school problems? Boys? You have to set the stage for them. They should be able to come to you for EVERYTHING.
Last, but not least, LOVE them. How many times a day do you tell your kids how much you love them? More importantly, how do you show them you love them? Yelling, hitting, and sending them to their rooms repeatedly doesn’t show love. You should only have to do this if things get really bad. You need to keep your cool. We all have our moments and lose our shit. Take 5, walk away, regroup and calmly talk to them. Take it one day at a time. Don’t over think things. You’re not the president. You don’t need to solve the worlds problems here. You can do this. Remember your kids depend on YOU. They need YOU. Be their HERO.
