Are you dating someone with kids? Are you the new step parent? Do you often ask yourself, what do I do? How can I be a good addition to my partner’s children? Or what is keeping you from being a positive influence on them?

Have you found yourself wondering how you should parent and what your boundaries are? Anyone who’s dating someone that has children probably asks themselves these questions.

None of us have guide books for this kind of stuff, just each other and other people’s experiences of what’s worked and what hasn’t.

Are you dating someone that has kids, yet you don’t?

I dated someone that didn’t have kids. It was very challenging. As parents, we tend to reference our childhood and use how our parents raised us as a guidebook. We pick what we feel was good parenting, leave what doesn’t appeal to us, and make adjustments to suit our own kids. When you have more than one child, you have to figure out how to parent your children with their different personalities. When your dating someone that doesn’t have kids they have to adjust with the different personalities of your kids. People with kids have been with their children since birth.  They have the years of learning and fine-tuning, which is something that your significant other without kids lacks. So, you need to understand that your new partner just got plopped into something with little to no experience. You have to be patient, give them a chance, do a lot of coaching and see how they do. See how your children feel about them. Have they bonded with your partner? Then make a determination if they are a good fit for you based off of that. Sometimes it works out really really well and sometimes it doesn’t.

Are you dating someone and you both have children?

Communication with your partner is essential. Once the two of you have decided you’re both ready to integrate the kids with the “other” parent, you need to discuss the expectations of each other. Remember, this is going to be a significant new change for the kids. They might get along really good, some might get jealous of the others. Depending on their ages and how long you have been with your partner will be big factors. They might be too young and not really know the difference. If they’re older, you might want your significant other to take more of a friend approach rather than approaching your kids as a parent. Or if you’re the other parent, you might get the “you’re not my dad/mom, you can’t tell me what to do” line from time to time. Not sitting down with your significant other and communicating how you want to parent/discipline them, you’re going to run into challenges and send conflicting messages to the kids.

Another thing to think about is if you and your ex are both in relationships, how does each step parent, co-parent do things with your kids? Does your ex-husband’s girlfriend/wife do things differently than your boyfriend/ husband? Is one more of a friend than the other? Is one more of a disciplinarian? In a perfect world we would all be on the same page, but we all know that doesn’t happen that way.

Unfortunately, some divorces leave behind a lot of unresolved anger, hurt, and resentment between spouses, and a lot of those feelings get deflected to the children. As the mature adults we all are, we need to put those feelings aside and co-parent together for the sake of our children. Children need proper structure, and what happens in one house should be the same in the other parent’s house. Discipline should be the same as well because just like we vetted our spouses before we got married, we need to do the same for the person we want to bring into our children’s lives. The vetting process should be more thorough than it was with our spouse because our children have gone through a major trauma such as the divorce of their parents. Remember, if you’re reading this and you are divorced, you didn’t get it right the 1st time, so you need to get it right the 2nd time for the sake of your children. You owe it to them and yourself!

Here are a few tips to becoming a good “other” parent:

  1. Develop a friendship first with your partners children.
  2. Be respectful to their kids, they should never hear you talking negatively about their father/mother, EVER, it doesn’t matter how much you dislike them
  3. Do things with them. Play sports in the back yard with them, for instance. Just you, one on one.
  4. Be kind, show compassion, their children. They have been through a trauma. They don’t need you coming in like a drill sergeant on the 1st day of training.
  5. Develop a relationship with each child individually. Find their weaknesses and be that person that turns them into a strength.
  6. Treat their parent that your with, with love. Children need to see that you love their mom and dad.
  7. Be genuine, if your a fake they will see right through you. Be there for the right reasons. If you have no intention on really wanting to have a relationship with your partners children then don’t bother because all you will do is create problems for their family and they don’t need that.
